Tricity records 143 cases in one day, Ut positivity rate at 5.92% | Chandigarh News

Chandigarh: On Sunday, 73 Covid cases were reported in Chandigarh, which is the highest one-day peak after February 12, when 87 cases were reported before the third wave began to ebb. After a four-month gap, this was the largest one-day increase in Covid cases. Active cases reached 322 and the positivity rate climbed to 5.92% on Sunday. The weekly rate was recorded at 4.18%.
“It still cannot be called a fourth wave because there are the same variations of Omicron circulated. There is no severity and a rapid increase in cases. Patients come in with flu-like symptoms and are also tested when they need surgery or other medical investigations,” said Professor PVM Lakshmi of Community Medicine and School of Public Health, PGIMER.
She added: “Seasonal fluctuations will occur. Now those who weren’t infected in any of the waves have been exposed. Only a small percentage are those of reinfection. Omicron is a mild infection, but the rate of transmission is faster.
In 20 days, 596 Covid cases were reported in June, more than the two months of May and June, when a total of 506 Covid cases were reported. Experts believe the numbers will rise, although the majority will be mild to moderate cases.
However, Professor Lakshmi said: “We have to be careful and do genome sequencing to monitor any change in the variant. All symptomatic Covid positives should be isolated for a week. Those with flu-like illness or a severe acute respiratory infection should get tested. »
