Tricia Cast deserves a big screenplay on the young and the restless
Young and the Restless fans were elated when Tricia Cast appeared last year as Nina Webster for her son Chance’s wedding to Abby. There was more good news when Nina returned to Genoa City on a more permanent basis earlier this year. While Nina is thrilled to have a grandchild, viewers wish she had something else – a script.
Tricia Cast deserves a screenplay
Tricia Cast was still a teenager when she debuted as a pregnant teenager and single Nina Webster on Y&R in 1986. Cricket, now Christine (Lauralee Bell), took her under her wing and tried to help Nina collect her baby from the black market baby broker Rose DeVille (late, tall Darlene Conley).
The young actress quickly established herself as a powerhouse – standing up to not only Conley’s Rose, but also Y&R great ladies Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor) and Jess Walton (Jill Foster Abbott). Nina getting pregnant with Phillip (Thom Bierdz) prompted the two rivals to team up for once – and they felt virtually unnumbered by Nina, who was determined to land Phillip. “I am the mother of Phillip Chancellor IV,” Nina would boast aloud to Kay and Jill.
Why Y&R fans love Tricia Cast and Nina
Despite Nina’s “in your face” attitude and cheeky bravado, Cast instilled great vulnerability and sympathy into her character. Nina emerged as a heroine. By the time she and Phillip got married, we wished she had a happy ending. Cast delivered a series of powerful performances following Phillip’s death in a car crash (or “death,” we’ll learn later). Vulnerable, Nina was taken in by con artist David Kimball (Michael Corbett), who plotted to marry and murder his unsuspecting wife for her millions as chancellor.
Nina has never been anyone’s victim for a very long time – she shot David, who survived, and was acquitted of her attempted murder in a compelling court case. Tricia Cast won a Daytime Emmy for this screenplay in 1992 in the Best Young Leading Actress category.
Throughout the 1990s, Nina found herself in a memorable love quadrangle with Ryan (Scott Reeves), Victoria Newman (Heather Tom) and Cole (J. Eddie Peck). When Nina left Genoa City in the early 2000s, she was immediately missed as viewers began to regard her as a precious friend.
Cast returned for another term at Y&R several years later, when Nina not only reunited with her firstborn – Ronan (Jeff Branson) – but she had an emotional roller coaster ride when she found out that Phillip had faked his death. so that he can openly live as a homosexual in Australia.
While these two stories could have kept Cast for a while, the stories ended pretty quickly by soap standards. Phillip returned inland while Ronan left town. Paul (Doug Davidson) ended his romance with Nina after realizing he still loved his best friend Christine.
Story for Nina Webster
Tricia Cast is one of Y&R’s most gifted performers, so while we love seeing her on our screens again, we would also love to see her do more than ask Abby (Melissa Ordway) how she feels and play adore, gift “Nana Nina” gifts to Dominique.
What’s Nina’s relationship with her ex, Phillip, like these days? In fact, is he even her ex-husband? Phillip and Nina were married at the time of his “death”. Maybe Phillip would need to return to Genoa City so that he and Nina can officially divorce. Nina is worried about Chance who is on a mission right now, but what about her dynamic with Ronan? The two made peace before leaving town, but is Ronan facing any long-term abandonment issues?
Nina is a writer. She could easily fit in with ChancComm or Newman Media to give her a reason to interact with more of Genoa City’s powerful players. Maybe she could write the memoir of Ashland Locke (Richard Burgi), and in doing so, viewers could learn what secrets (if any?) Ashland could keep. Nina and Victoria’s (Amelia Heinle) joke-filled encounters at the time were staple on television, so if Nina were to be in Ashland’s orbit, there would be interactions with Victoria. Let the battle begin !
Tricia Cast is an acting gem in Y&R crown. We know she can deliver the goods. Hopefully the show gives her a meaty storyline so the actress can once again show us what she’s really capable of.
