Frenkie de Jong beams with positivity during national team interview
At times in the Barcelona experience, it felt like everything was going terribly wrong for Frenkie de Jong.
The talented Dutch midfielder arrived for €70m in 2019 and for most of his Barcelona career he failed to show off that talent. Going on a run of sensational form towards the end of the 2020/21 season relieved some of the criticism that was starting to grow.
That negativity returned at the start of this season as de Jong failed to assert himself again. After Nico Gonzalez and Gavi’s good form, some have wondered if Barcelona might consider selling de Jong.
However, in recent months, as Xavi’s revolution took effect, de Jong once again showed his prodigious ability and put in a great showing in El Clasico.
This was reflected in his words, as he fielded questions from the Dutch press during the international break.
“At Barca we are playing very well. It’s going well for me and I feel good at the club too. I can’t say anything negative about it. I came here with a lot of confidence.
“We started playing better as a team and as a result, I started playing better as well.”
The quotes were carried by Mundo Deportivowhere de Jong also noted the impact of Barcelona’s winter signings.
“The new players add quality. In addition, we have more options than in previous months, which also makes it easier for me. Now we have a lot of confidence and our game is improving.
Certainly, it looks like de Jong has found his groove lately under Xavi, despite initial dissatisfaction with Ronald Koeman’s sacking.
