Restless Dance Theater announced today that company director Nick Hughes will be retiring after an exceptional 24-year career with Restless.

Nick worked with all six art directors during his tenure and was the stable foundation from which the company was able to prosper and grow. His generosity and kindness were felt throughout the Restless family and the company thanked Nick for his outstanding contribution to Restless and the South Australian arts community.

Nick’s impact on the arts was recently demonstrated with the presentation of the Geoff Crowhurst Memorial Award to the South Australian Ruby Awards for his outstanding contribution to community cultural development.

When he left Nick:

I have met so many amazing and wonderful people and have learned to respect and value people with disabilities as capable and distinctive human beings who deserve the same dignity and support as everyone else. Thank you to everyone who made my trip so rewarding and joyful. There are many precious memories that I will take with me.

Nick Linke, Chairman of the Board of Restless Dance Theater:

Nick was an integral member of the team that built Restless from the incredible foundations laid by Sally Chance and her team to fulfill the dream of having Disability Informed Dance celebrated nationally and internationally, creating for the first time in Australia a professional career path of dancers informed by disability.

Nick is highly respected as a very experienced and knowledgeable arts administrator and leader. His wise advice, enthusiasm and expertise will be missed.

Nick leaves our organization in a very strong position having achieved year-over-year growth over many years (despite some funding issues) and leaves us with an exceptional team of dedicated professionals who will continue to implement and support our existing programs and partnerships.

As Chairman of the Board, I want to recognize Nick’s dedication and hard work for Restless over many years. I am sure you will join us in congratulating him on an outstanding career with Restless and his overall contribution to the arts in this incredible state of the arts.

Julie Moralee will assume the role of Managing Director of Restless at the end of January 2022. Moralee has worked for Restless Dance Theater as Director of Marketing and Development since 2019.

Her 20-year career in the arts and entertainment industry in South Australia has seen her occupy roles with Sony Music, Universal Pictures, Adelaide Festival Center; as well as a wealth of experiences with major festivals including the Come Out Festival, the Adelaide International Guitar Festival, the OzAsia Festival and most recently the Adelaide Fringe. Julie brings with her diverse skills and in-depth knowledge of partnership building and long-term business development.

On her new appointment Julie Moralee:

It is an absolute honor to take the reins at such an important, exciting and stimulating time in the company’s history. I look forward to working alongside the incredible visionaries, Artistic Director Michelle Ryan and Creative Producer, Roz Hervey, to take the company to even greater heights over the next 30 years!

Restless Artistic Director Michelle Ryan commented:

I would like to personally thank Nick for his guidance and support over the past nine years since I joined Restless. I wish her an excellent retirement and welcome Julie to her new role and look forward to continuing our work together.
