MUMBAI: The state and Mumbai reported a drop in the number of cases and deaths on Thursday, but active cases continued to rise.
The state reported 3,595 cases and 45 deaths, bringing the cumulative total to 65.1 lakh cases and 1.4 lakh deaths. Active cases jumped from more than 300 to 49,342 on Thursday, including 101 in Mumbai. Cases in the city rose by 446, from 515 on Wednesday, and only two deaths were recorded.
“We performed 44,649 tests in Mumbai and 446 tested positive. As the number of daily cases has increased and decreased, the positivity rate is less than 1% and the death rate is also low, ”BMC Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani said, adding that civic health mechanisms would continue. to be on high alert. “We have beds, oxygen support and medication to cope with the increase,” he added. At present, the total number of cases in Mumbai is 7.4 lakh and the toll stands at 16,039.
State government officials have said the drop in testing due to the holiday season is cause for concern and that districts have been urged to speed up testing. There are nearly 17 districts that have less than 100 active cases, and testing in these districts has declined significantly. “Once worshipers start returning to the cities, they should be screened for symptoms and tested if necessary,” one official said, referring to people returning after the Ganpati festival.
